Northern
Territory 1 346 200 km² and168 300 inhabitants (mostly
Aboriginals), half of them living in Darwin, the capital city. Two hundred and fifty kilometres east of Darwin, is Kakadu National Park, whose
spectacular standstone escarpment contains unique Aboriginal art galleries. Rainforests,
bushland, superb wet-season waterfalls and bird-filled wetlands capture the imagination of
all the visitors.
South of the state, is the famous "Red Centre" (the ancient heart of Australia): Ayers Rock and the Olgas
along with the deserts around are the symbols of the the real Outback.
"The Alice" is two thirds of the way down Stuart Highway (the "Track") along which are the
impressing Nitmiluk
canyons (Katherine Gorge)
In the south west corner is Simpson desert, well-known for its harsh, parched
desolation in the summer.
At the top end of the state, is the cosmopolitan Darwin with its
unique yacht races, its manifold attractions and its... "sweet" salties. |
