New South Wales lies over
801 600 km².
The capital city is Sydney,
largest in Australia, bustling with life and activity. 300 km south of Sydney is Canberra, the federal capital in the Australian Capital Territory.
The towns north and south are known for their wide ocean beaches (Bondi Beach). North of Sydney is
Coffs Harbour, the town where the mountains meet the ocean a beautiful place for relaxing
by the sea.
Sixty-five kilometres west of Sydney are the Blue Mountains. They are composed
of standstone, deposited up until 170 million years ago, then push up into a plateau,
diturbed by volcanic activity and finally eroded into deep gorges by weather and rivers.
From a distance, the mountains appear hazy blue, an illusion caused
by sunlight passing through fine droplets of oil evaporating from the leaves of their
abundant eucalypt forests.
On the border with South Australia is Broken
Hill known as "Silver
City"(Outback). Today its fame comes from its art galleries where
Bush artists display paintings of the rugged landscapes around. |
