In 1909,
the Australian legislators decided to build a new capital city by the Molongo River, in
southern New
South Wales.
American Burley Griffin designed the new city of Canberra
in the Australian Capital
Territory.
The implantation of Burley Griffin's plan was completed
with the creation of Lake Burley Griffin in the 1960s. In the eighties Canberra, a proud
city of 325 400 inhabitants, spread across the "limestone plains".
There are now elegant buildings, broad boulevards, three city
centres, three universities, colleges and institutes, memorials, research centres,
museums, and fine gardens.
All roads lead to Capital Hill, crowned by the superb Parliament House, opened in 1988. |
