Tasmania island lies over
67 800 km². It's a world apart with its 471 700 inhabitants.
Capital city is Hobart (193 300).
The island is proud of its history and reminders of the convict days
still exist in the ruins of Port Arthur, a penal settlement on the Tasman Peninsula, and in roads, bridges and
historic stone buildings in towns.
Tasmania contains many wilderness areas, ranging from stark and
rugged mountain peaks to unspoiled coast, from rainforest to the glory of wild rivers.
In its heart is the famous National Park (covering two thirds of the
island ) with the magnificent rainforests, and the famous Cradle Mountain, a favorite of trekers.
Tasmania is the paradise of orchards (Huon Valley).
The cool, pleasant climate (and the warm hospitality of Tasmanians
combine to make this southern State a true "holiday island" with many sea-side
